The Beckon Call
05:03
|

On these cold grounds we watch the fires die
Steep cliffs above we can't get no grip
For every foot that I'm ascending here
There's always three feet back that I slip
We'll find a place at the top to sit
We'll look upon our path
And plainly see the mistakes and wrong turns
That we have made along the way
I was not born here into wealth
I hardly had my own health
Came up in a town where the wise show fear
In the stead of a cradle, there was a replacement
I was born in the basement of a house on a farm
The beckon call
We were young
We would see how far we'd get tonight
Before we heard the call to home
We would roam along the fire's side
Into the depths we choose to run and dive
On the wet grass we can't get no grip
For every foot that I'm progressing here
There's always three feet back that I slip
We'll find a place with a view to sit
We'll look upon our path
And plainly see the mistakes and wrong turns
That we have made along the way
We made our break on the tollway
(Slept in shifts along the way)
I don't know why this means so much to me
(A softly repeated phrase)
Now we lay here with this mattress on the floor
I was half asleep back when she kissed me
Then she vanished right out the door
The jealous moan
The crawl home has come again
It has no end in sight
They drag their hands along the fence
You must learn to hide your innocence
Where we'll go, no one knows
You must sense the lack of warmth and light
If you listen close, we're beckoned home
Though you can't tell from where you hear the cry
Out of the fire here we shall reemerge
On these tall flames we can't get no grip
For every foot that I'm ascending here
There's always three feet back that I slip
We'll find a place at the top to sit
We'll look upon our path
And plainly see the mistakes and wrong turns
That we have made along the way

In The Cold Light

Tonight he's gatherin' up his love
At least the bits that still exist
Stack them up, shut them off
His opened arms now display two fists
Heard that his baby she's leaving town
Found an escape, she's gonna have it
Now he's free, yeah he's free
Along with newly formed bad habits
Thought they could walk on air
These hearts of iron could not be damaged
Her skin so soft and fair
His turned to leather
This town had ravaged his soul
My dear, away our hope seemed to run
I admit that in the cold light of the sun
And the dirt that stains the hem of your dress
Leaves a trail, as all the tears you've wept
But the moment you're not homesick
Is the moment you have given up
And I'm sorry that it sounds so cruel
Wasted days when you used to love this fool
Dreamt of a woman that he used to know
Though now she wears a long black veil
One day she ran home and cried to her mother, "These romantic thoughts are doomed to fail."
"I told my baby I'm leavin' town.
Dug in his heels, he wouldn't have it"
"So now he's free, yeah he's free.
Sleeps in a bed with his bad habits."
"Thought we could walk on air
Once intertwined we'd not be damaged
We're all born blind and scared
It all depends on your reaction to the cold"
Boys tonight we are approaching the border
Ain't gonna take no orders
They held us dead in their sights
If they wanted we would bring them their fight
In the night the wind kicked up the dust
Created shapes in the spotlights
Above the chanting cries
His old words, they did rise

Bell Tower

Say so long to the life you had
You can't guard yourself from the truth
'Cause you don't know what is comin'
You can't pretend like you know what's comin'
We roam the streets howling at the moon
A pack of starving wolves
The last thing we need is food
You'll see me leave from window next to your bed
Now we're wilting in wake of this summer heat
Only emerging in the night offers little relief
In search of someone that reminds us of home
So say so long to the life you had
Say so long to yourself
'Cause you don't know who is comin'
You can't pretend like you know who you're becomin'
And you don't know what is comin'
You can't predict if the courage is there to summon
The water cold and black on the river banks
No fireworks in the sky
There is no one giving thanks
The excitement has run out with the tide
Now all your things are back in boxes
Are we leaving here?
Is it time to settle down or should we stay another year?
How do we know if things will ever work out?
(Have to be able to)
Say so long to the life we had
Say so long to your friend
'Cause you don't know what is comin
You can't pretend like you know where we're goin'
So say so long to the life you had
There's no more concept of home
But you can't exist if you don't take chances
With poor returns and failed romances
Outside our widow the bell tower tolls
Not for the fallen ones, but those left old

Wander With The Night
04:35

She used to sing as we crept through the streets
That voice would carry from the plains to the shadowy peaks
And we would spin in the protection of night
Our bodies yearned for one another
Flaws were hidden from sight
But that was long ago
Now wander with the night, I will
Feeling lost in the final thrill
They speak in tongues
Click their heels on the pavement
No one's aware how out of touch I have become
God couldn't tell you where this world had come from
He stumbled across it just like everyone
But that was long ago
We spent the night on the cathedral stairs
(Can we build a new life or are we playin' it safe?)
From every window there's someone who glares
(Are they trapped in that life or are they scared to be safe?)
Please don't bother with the delicate touch
I won't feel a thing
Lately dear, I don't feel much
Now wander with the night, I will
Feeling lost in the final thrill

Talking Shadows

A bitter truth;
The world will not stop turning
It waits not for you
Nor will I hear excuses for this anger burning
Deep in your eyes
He laid down the rifle at his feet
And brushed the dirt from his hands on his thighs
He asked me:
"You really want to waste your time doing good, then get stuck in the sky?"
Good luck...
'Cause you don't belong
Anymore than I was born
A wealthy, respected man's son
And you don't have long
By the sound of those drums growing near
They are many and you are one
You are one
Now you, you held the line
It was drawn there deeply down in the dirt
Emblazoned only by the memories of what you left behind
This countryside
It was once a place to raise our young
Now the future site for cowards to dry their eyes
I hit an age in which the chances offered fell to the side
They told me:
"Go learn a trade young man, and hit the ground running. It don't pay to be shy."
So I left home
But when the money won't come
We all start getting hungry
We shed our disguise
I hear the shadows talk
"It's time to learn to get those clean hands dirty. Now we'll meet there tonight."
He said, but...
I know that I don't belong
Even though I wasn't born
A wealthy, respected man's son
Now you, you held the line
It was called out by the voices buried in the dirt
Emblazoned only by the memories of what you left behind
The underside of this city comes into view
Now the future site for cowards to dry their eyes
If this was suppose to be the easiest way
Then why did all those men shout?
If this was suppose to lead to brighter days
Then why'd we have to hide out?
Now I know that I don't belong
Among these men
There's not a single respectable one
Now I know that I don't have long
With the sound of the sirens growing near
They are many and I am one
I am one
I was one
I was...
Now you, you held the line
It was drawn by someone deeply there in the dirt
Emblazoned only by the memories of what they left behind
This country side
It was once a place to keep our young
Now the future site for cowards to dry their eyes
So dry your eyes
